Around the Neighborhood

The Old South Gaylord Shopping District, located at the 1000 block of South Gaylord between Mississippi and Tennessee Avenues, is the second oldest shopping district in Denver. This single block is packed with dozens of matchless boutiques, restaurants and beauty spas.

Old South Gaylord St., founded in 1924, is one of the oldest business districts in Denver. It was a cable car turn-around for the Denver City Tramway Company until the 1950's when the street cars were replaced with buses. Gaylord St. supplied the surrounding neighborhood with their daily mercantile needs including: grocery, bakery, candy and drug stores, shoe repair, a watch maker, dentist, creamery, plumber, tailor and a popular dry goods store.

By 1926 Gaylord attracted many new businesses including a hairdresser, barber, physician, printer, radio repairman, cleaners, fruit store, auto repair garage, restaurant and most notably a movie theater. Several family homes were still interspersed with the businesses and some of today's businesses are using those homes for their offices and stores.

In the late 50's on into the 70's, Gaylord St. metamorphosed into a
business community for small independent boutiques, specialty stores
and restaurants, such as Reiver's Restaurant, established in 1977 and
is still popular today.

In 1992, Gaylord St. experienced a major physical renovation where
improvements were made to the sidewalks, lighting and St.scape. This
renovation maintained South Gaylord St.'s old world charm and enhanced its ability to attract new, upscale businesses and services.

Today, visitors to South Gaylord St. are greeted by passionate
business owners who offer friendly personal service showcasing a
variety of upscale boutiques, galleries and restaurants as well as
professional services and talented regional craftsmen.

Getting There

Locating Bonnie Brae & Old S. Gaylord Street

Both of these neighborhoods are southeast of downtown Denver, just east of Washington Park.
The Bonnie Brae business district runs along S University Blvd. between E Exposition and E Ohio Aves.
The Old South Gaylord Street business district runs along S Gaylord St. between E Tennessee and E Mississippi Aves.

Driving Directions from Downtown

Take Speer Blvd. south towards Cherry Creek for about 3 mi.
Turn south (right) onto University Blvd.
In a mile, you'll reach Bonnie Brae at Exposition Ave.
To continue to Gaylord, stay on University for another ½ mile.
Turn west (right) onto Mississippi Ave.
In 2 blocks, turn north (right) onto S. Gaylord St.

Driving Directions from I-25

Take exit 205 for University Blvd. and head north for 1 mi.
Carefully turn west (left) onto Tennessee Ave.
Turn south (left) onto S. Gaylord St.
To continue to Bonnie Brae, head north on S. Gaylord for 2 blocks to Ohio Ave. and turn east (right).
When you reach University, you've arrived.
